The Challenge

Integrating Old and New: Expanding Solar Capacity and Adding Backup Power for a Resilient Off-Grid System

This client originally had a 6.2 kW rooftop solar system installed by Greenwired in 2019, connected to a 200-amp main panel.

With a growing household and increased energy consumption, his original northwest-facing array was no longer meeting their needs.

Additionally, our client had experienced frequent PG&E power outages and wanted a reliable battery backup system, along with additional solar production.

One of the biggest technical challenges for this project was integrating the existing rooftop solar array with a new ground-mounted array and incorporating a generator for extended outages—a first for our installation team.

The Solution

Ground Mount Solar, Battery Storage, and Generator Integration for Maximum Energy Resilience

To meet this client's energy goals, we expanded his system by installing a new 6 kW ground mount array and adding 20 kWh of battery storage. We converted the existing DC-coupled system to an AC-coupled configuration to allow seamless integration of the new components.

Careful planning and coordination were essential, especially when it came to minimizing disruption during the installation process.

By preparing all necessary conductor runs in advance, we were able to limit this client’s power downtime to the shortest time possible.

For additional resilience, we tied in a generator that’s capable of recharging the battery bank in about 90 minutes during prolonged PG&E outages.

The Results

Reliable Power, Lower Bills-Energy Independence and Peace of Mind"

Since the upgrade, this client has not experienced a single power outage, and his monthly energy bills have dropped significantly.

The new battery system provides 8–10 hours of backup power, depending on household load, giving him peace of mind during grid failures.

The generator adds an extra layer of energy security, ensuring that even during extended outages, the batteries can quickly recharge and continue supplying power.

This project stands as a great example of how thoughtful system expansion and backup planning can deliver both energy savings and power reliability for homeowners in Humboldt County. It also highlights how, with the right design and sizing, battery backup systems can lead to greater energy independence.
